Vincent Castillo

Partner

Mr. Castillo specializes in the defense of general liability; employment-related claims, including alleged discrimination, retaliation, failure to accommodate, and whistleblower actions; and product liability cases. His practice includes representing clients involved in the railroad and busing industries, including investigation and litigation of catastrophic accidents. Mr. Castillo obtained his BA from UC Berkeley and his JD from the University of San Francisco School of Law. Mr. Castillo has tried numerous cases to verdict in both state and federal courts. In December 2021, Mr. Castillo tried a wrongful death case where the decedent was struck and killed by a train. After less than 4 hours of deliberation, the jury returned a defense verdict.

Patrick Moriarty

Partner

Mr. Moriarty earned his BA from the University of California, Los Angeles and his law degree from University of San Francisco. He has divided his legal career between criminal law and civil law. Mr. Moriarty was a prosecutor in the Alameda County District Attorney’s office for 14 years. He has worked in civil litigation for 7 years. Mr. Moriarty currently specializes in the defense of police officers and public entities; he has tried 40 jury trials.

Joanne Tran

Partner

Ms. Tran earned her B.A. in International Studies and minor in Political Science from the University of California, Irvine in 2010 and obtained her J.D. in 2013 from the Seattle University School of Law. Since 2014, she has specialized in the defense of public entities, including counties, cities and police departments, involving claims of  constitutional and civil rights violations, personal injury, and public entity torts. She has advised and represented clients from initial investigation of claims through pleadings, discovery, summary judgment, and she has successfully tried cases to defense verdicts. Ms. Tran has been an active member of the State Bar of California since 2013 and is admitted to the Federal District Court for the Northern and Eastern Districts of California, as well as the United States Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. 

John Robinson

Partner

After being honorably discharged from the US Marine Corps, Mr. Robinson obtained his BA from the University of South Carolina. He graduated from the Honors Lawyering Program at the Golden Gate University School of Law. After law school, Mr. Robinson served more than 5 years as a prosecutor with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. He now specializes in defending public entities and law enforcement officers in state and federal courts. Mr. Robinson has tried 15 jury trials (criminal and civil) and has proven successful at all stages of litigation.

Alexei Offill-Klein

Partner

Mr. Offill-Klein obtained his BA from UC Berkeley and his JD from UC Davis School of Law. He has state and federal trial experience, including second-chairing a jury trial in San Francisco District Court in December 2021 in which the jury returned a defense verdict in a wrongful death case where the decedent was struck and killed by a train. Mr. Offill-Klein specializes in the defense of cases involving wrongful death, catastrophic injury, and employment-related claims, including alleged discrimination, retaliation, and failure to accommodate. 

Mr. Offill-Klein lives in Oakland and is from Los Angeles.

John Laughlin

Associate

Mr. Laughlin works in all of the firm's practice areas including public entity tort liability, civil rights, transportation, and employment litigation. Mr. Laughlin graduated from Santa Clara University with degrees in Economics and United States History and earned his JD at Washington University in St. Louis. Before joining CMTR, Mr. Laughlin practiced employment law, public entity defense, and represented victims of California wildfires in mass tort litigation. Prior to his legal career, Mr. Laughlin taught high school Algebra and Calculus in the Bayview–Hunters Point neighborhood of San Francisco.

Edward Vieira-Ducey

Of Counsel

Mr. Vieira-Ducey earned his BA from Georgetown University and his law degree from the University of California, Davis. He served as a deputy district attorney in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for 16 years. In that time he worked in the Office's law and motion, child sexual assault, public integrity (including maintaining the Office's Brady Bank) and general felony units, where he conducted numerous investigations and tried 25 jury trials to verdict. He was also on the board of Alameda County Prosecutors' Association, the union representing line prosecutors in Alameda County, serving as its president for three years. Mr. Vieira-Ducey currently specializes in the defense of police officers and public entities.
